Farriers

Currently Stewart Mawyer shoes horses for Summerhill and Norwood. If you would like to use Stewart, your horse will be placed on a rotation; we will hold your horse; and you will be charged for both the shoeing/trim and a $5 holding fee on your next monthly bill. If you would prefer to use your own farrier, you will be responsible for holding your own horse and payment. Also, we ask that you not schedule your farrier during feeding time (7-9AM and 4-6 PM).

Veterinarian

Summerhill and Norwood use Virginia Equine for all of our veterinary services. We strongly request that you use Virginia Equine for your veterinary needs. All of our horses are vaccinated on the same day in the spring and fall, and there is no charge for holding your horse on this day. If you choose to use your own veterinarian, you will be responsible for scheduling your appointments and holding your own horse. Also, we ask that you not schedule your appointment during feeding time (7-9AM and 4-6 PM). If you choose to use your own veterinarian, we require that you provide a copy of your horse’s vaccination records in the spring and fall. This allows us to ensure that all horses receive the proper vaccines.

Incoming Veterinary Requirements

Summerhill and Norwood both require all incoming horses to have both a current, negative Coggins and a current intranasal strangles vaccine (this is a two vaccine series).

Deworming

All horses are dewormed every other month on a rotational schedule of fenbendazole, ivermectin, and pyrantel pamoate. Once a year, we deworm with Quest or Quest Plus. On these months you will be charged an additional fee of $10/horse for the dewormer and its administration. If you would prefer to deworm your own horse, you must inform Joe so as to ensure all horses are on a routine deworming schedule.

Boarding

At Summerhill and Norwood, we pride ourselves in knowing each horse as an individual. We have very few employees, so the same knowledgeable and trustworthy staff will handle your horse on a daily basis. This also helps us to better monitor your horse’s condition and pick up on subtle changes that might be missed at busier barns. Joe Hairfield manages Norwood and owns Summerhill. He feeds twice daily at Norwood and then works at Summerhill, so you can be sure your horse will receive expert care. Please see below for our boarding options as well as our farrier and veterinary services.

  1. *Please see our Home page for which types of boarding are currently available.
